ATMOsphere, a market accelerator of clean cooling and heating technologies using natural refrigerants, has announced the final program for the for the ATMOsphere (ATMO) Europe Summit 2022, taking place in person in Brussels, Belgium, November 15–16.
This year’s summit, the 12th edition of ATMO Europe, will be held at the Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre in the Brussels city center.
In addition to industry case studies covering carbon dioxide/CO2(R744), hydrocarbon and ammonia/NH3 (R717) refrigerants, the two-day program will feature end-user experiences and policy developments. Other topics will include market updates on heat pumps, the health and environmental impact of f-gas refrigerants, training, SF6-free switchgear technologies, the ATMOsphere Natural Refrigerants Label, and the Cold Chain Innovation Hub (CCI-Hub) in the Philippines. There will also be networking drinks on the evening of November 15.

The three end-user speakers will be Olaf Schulze, Vice President, Director Energy Management/Real Estate Sustainability for METRO Properties Holding GmbH; David Schalenbourg, Director Delhaize Technics, for Delhaize Belgium, a division of Ahold Delhaize; and Dr. Aikaterini Boulamanti, Energy Specialist, Coop Switzerland.
Schulze will discuss METRO’s F-Gas-Exit Program, including an update on its rollout of transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems with ejectors and heat recovery. Schalenbourg will address Delhaize’s integrated transcritical CO2 systems, which include refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat reclaim for heating and hot water. Boulamanti will explain the approach Coop Switzerland is taking to refrigeration, which includes transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems.
Two panels will address the impact and regulation of fluorinated refrigerants. A panel on changes in the EU F-gas Regulation of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) will include Bas Eickhout, Member of the European Parliament; Bente Tranholm Schwarz, Deputy Head of Unit, DG Clima, European Commission; Clare Perry, Climate Campaign Leader, Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA); and Kęstutis Kupšys, Vice-President, Lithuanian Consumers Alliance and member, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).
Another panel will address the upcoming consideration of regulating some HFCs, hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and refrigerant degradation product trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as PFAS (forever chemicals) under the EU’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation. This panel will include Jutta Paulus, Member of the European Parliament; Audun Heggelund, Senior Adviser, Section for Chemicals, Norwegian Environment Agency; Collin Bootsveld, Project Engineer, BOOTSVELD PARTNERS/Colruyt Group; Jonatan Kleimark, Senior Chemicals and Business Advisor, ChemSec; and Thomas Frank, CEO, Refolution Industriekälte.
